1st b'day rituals

Levi's 1st b'day didn't quite meet Indian standards.
We were supposed to have sweets to hand out to people to celebrate his b'day but after arriving at the National Zoological Park (a.k.a. The Delhi Zoo) we had to throw the candies in the "dust bin" for fear that we might try to feed them to the animals. I guess we don't want a rhino choking on a carmel. The zoo was pretty good. It's quite large- especially for being smack in the middle of the city. We saw rhinos, white tigers, alligators with nobby noses and sloth bears to name a few.
Our next "blunder" was totally by choice. It is Indian custom to shave baby's heads for their first b'day believing that their hair will grow back thicker. Thankfully Levi has a lot of hair so no one's given us a hard time about it. I won't part with his little wisps and curls yet- even if it's getting too long for Sean's military hair rules.
We had Afghan chicken which is obviously not Indian but we did have it with rice and daal (totally Indian) and I'm sure many children here have eaten rice and daal for their 1st b'day so I'm going to give us a point there. Tradition is to have pineapple cake for birthdays and, although we didn't do that either, we still won because Dave and Anna, our Red Moon Bakery friends, made a chocolate strawberry cake for Levi.
We had a bunch of new friends over to celebrate in the evening and Levi was quite excited about all his presents. One gift was a couple of plastic cricket bats and ball that the boys play with all day long.
Can't get more Indian than cricket, rice and daal!
